The always-on display: what it really costs in battery — and when to turn it off

Since Series 5, the Apple Watch face never fully goes dark — it dims to a slow, low-power version of itself and stays readable all day. It's the feature that makes the watch feel like a watch. It's also working every single minute you're awake, and it isn't free. Here's what it actually costs, and how to decide what to do about it.

How always-on manages to be (fairly) cheap

The trick is the display hardware: modern Apple Watch screens can slow their refresh rate down to once per second when your wrist is down. The dimmed face drops animations, hides sensitive complications, and cuts brightness — so the "always on" state costs a fraction of the active one.

A fraction of all day is still real, though. The honest answer to "what does it cost?" is: it depends on your face and your day — a bright, complication-heavy face in sunlight costs more than a dark minimal one indoors. In everyday use, expect it to shave roughly an hour or two off the day; on a long GPS workout, its share grows because the display stays lit through the whole session.

When turning it off is actually worth it

For a normal day — one that ends with charge to spare — turning off always-on saves battery you weren't going to run out of anyway. It's worth it on the days without slack:

  • Race day and long workouts.

    The display is lit for the entire session. Turning always-on off for a marathon is the easiest real saving after Low Power Mode — details in the race-day guide.

  • Travel days and festival days.

    Sixteen waking hours far from a charger is exactly when an hour or two of margin decides whether the watch makes it to midnight.

  • The watch's later years.

    As battery health declines, always-on eats a growing share of a shrinking day. Turning it off is a free way to give an old watch its full day back.

The switch lives in Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On, on the watch or in the Watch app. In practice, watchOS's Low Power Mode is often the better lever — it turns off always-on and trims background work in one tap, and can switch on automatically at 10%.

The middle grounds most people skip

Off/on isn't the only choice. A darker, simpler watch face with fewer complications makes the always-on state cheaper without giving it up. Reduced brightness helps both states. And Theater Mode (the masks icon in Control Center) turns the display fully dark for a movie or a concert without touching your settings.

Keep the feature, manage the exceptions

Always-on is one of the best things about wearing an Apple Watch. Rather than giving it up every day to protect the occasional bad one, let the bad days announce themselves: vaka taps your wrist when the battery passes a level you choose, while charging is still a ten-minute detour. On the days the tap never comes, you kept the pretty face and lost nothing.
